Officials consider seismic shift in food policy

Farm to fork

Say "yes" to a sustainable food system

Urge officials to adopt the new "sustainable diet" guidelines, today!

Take Action

Dear Paov,

This is exactly the kind of shift we’ve been working toward.

Federal officials are considering a new set of dietary guidelines that include not just what’s on your plate, but the broader impacts of food choices — including how that food was produced.

Final week to sign on! » We know food choices matter. Making these field-to-fork connections would be a seismic shift in our national food policy. Sign on today, and we'll deliver your signature to USDA, FDA and the White House before the comment period closes this Friday, May 8.

Here’s the backstory to this extraordinary opportunity.

Earlier this year, the panel of independent experts that reviews our national dietary guidelines recommended that, as a nation, we move toward a "sustainable diet." This powerful concept — already influencing food policies throughout Europe — focuses on what it will take to have a healthy food system for all, now and into the future:

"Meeting current and future food needs will depend on . . . altering individual and population dietary choices and developing agricultural and production practices that reduce environmental impacts and conserve resources."

While the current recommendations focus mostly on the dietary choice side of the equation, the "sustainable diet" concept opens up a much-needed conversation about the health and environmental impacts of our food production and policies.

Beyond the plate » Our food system should nourish and sustain us, not cause health and environmental harm. Sign on to urge President Obama and Secretaries Vilsack and Burwell to accept the expert panel's "sustainable diet" recommendations.

Thank you for raising your voice for real and lasting change!
