Dear Paov,
We are blown away. Last week we asked you if we should work to ensure Harper isn’t re-elected in this year’s federal election. Your response was overwhelming -- over 90% of you want us to make this a priority.
We heard that many of you are concerned about our environmental and climate laws being gutted, about undue influence of oil companies, reckless trade deals, privacy laws, anti-terror legislation and public service cutbacks. We also heard that seed ownership, patenting and GMOs concern you, as well as corporate taxes, jobs, omnibus legislation, the rights of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, muzzling of scientists, and attacks on unions. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s clear from the over 25,000 of you who took this survey Canada isn’t heading down the path it should be. We’ve heard you loud and clear, and we’re excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Just take a look at this:
Should SumOfUs make it a priority to work on the 2015 federal election?
Here are some things that we’re keen to to do to help elect a government that’s accountable to citizens instead of corporations:
- Cutting-edge corporate research on candidates, issues and Harper’s record,
- Hold candidates and parties accountable, especially when they’ve taken large sums of money from big corporations, and have a track record of putting corporate interests first,
- Share great resources developed by ally groups like Leadnow,
- Buy ads, invest in media and communications to make sure that whoever is elected works to puts citizens’ rights before corporate interests.
To make this plan happen, an amazing 4,394 of you said you’d like to volunteer by making calls, writing letters or attending events. Others said they’d drive voters to the polls or encourage friends to vote. Photographers and graphic designers offered their skills -- and an artist even said they’d donate their art to raise money!
The SumOfUs community is inspiring -- and we’re so excited to get to work. Already over 650 people have chipped in to get our campaign going.
We have our work cut out for us -- Harper is already putting his big fundraising arm into motion and calling on his top advisors to start raising money for this fall’s election.
But, just like Alberta’s election results showed us this week -- people power can do amazing things. We'll be able to counter the Conservatives with our own campaign, but we need your help to make it really pop.
The last election was decided with just 6,201 votes. Just imagine what the tens of thousands of us who have taken action already can accomplish together.
Thanks for all you do,Angus, Emma, Liz and the team at SumOfUs

SumOfUs is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy.
