Once again, migrant and foreign workers in Canada are being victimized by the federal government’s mismanagement of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and immigration policy generally. But activists and foreign workers across the country refuse to remain silent about this ongoing injustice.
Demonstrations in seven Canadian cities over the past three weeks were organized in opposition to the April 1, 2015 deportation deadline faced by low-skill workers in the TFWP (including workers in agriculture), the Live-In Caregiver Program, and the Caregiver stream. By some estimates approximately 70,000 foreign workers are now subject to this deadline. Read more!

RankandFile.ca is seeking a writer/organizer located in western or northern Canada (BC, AB, SK, MB and the Territories) for a six month position. The new hire will work closely with our editorial team to both produce new content for the website and develop new contacts, writers and readers. The new hire will be expected to produce at least one original news story a month, participate in monthly writers meetings, solicit stories from local activists and signup readers to our weekly email list.
We are looking for an individual who is dedicated and hard-working, well organized, and who has an understanding of the labour movement. The successful candidate will be motivated, have a demonstrated ability to manage their limited time and work independently. WORKERS IN NOVA SCOTIA FIGHT TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE

On April 1, minimum wage workers in Nova Scotia got a raise. But unfortunately for Omar Joof, and thousands of other workers, the meagre 20 cent increase still isn’t enough to make ends meet.
Sitting in a McDonald’s off Lacewood Drive, Joof tells me that he has been working the backshift as a cleaner at the Halifax Shopping Centre for the past six years. When I asked why he prefers working backshift, he explains that it’s because the night shift gives him the opportunity to get another part-time job.
“It’s a lot of work but that’s what you have to do in order to survive,” says Joof, who has been working at least two jobs for the best part of the last thirteen years, sometimes pulling in up to 135 hours every two weeks. Read More!
