Friends,
I have to be honest, I’m getting tired. I’m tired of fighting for a clean future one pipeline at a time. I’m tired of announcements like Friday's from the Canadian government: weak climate targets that our country has no hope of reaching while tar sands expansion continues, with no consideration of Indigenous rights. But I’m heartened by the growing power of people and communities– winning victories for social justice, clean jobs, and a safe climate across Canada.
This July, we're mobilizing across movements for a safe climate and a justice-based economy. An unprecedented coalition of Indigenous frontline communities, the labour movement, social justice organizations, environmental groups, poverty-prevention groups, faith communities, scientists, students, and thousands of others will take to the streets of downtown Toronto. The March... for Jobs, Justice and the Climate will be the most diverse climate action in this country’s history, and the largest climate mobilization to hit Canada’s financial centre.
On the eve of the Pan-American Conference on Climate Change, we will demonstrate to the world that there is massive support in Canada for strong climate action. We will tell our leaders that we are ready to shift from the volatile, boom-and-bust cycles of a fossil fuel economy to a new, stable, clean economy that promotes equity, respects the sovereignty of Canada’s First Nations and recognizes the limitations of our climate.
We are ready to make history in Toronto this summer. Will you join us? Click here to register for the March for Jobs, Justice and the Climate.
Canada needs an energy economy that respects Free Prior and Informed consent of Indigenous frontline communities and creates good, green jobs for workers. It is morally indefensible for us to continue to pursue an economic growth strategy that brings our climate closer to an irreversible tipping point. Climate change has already devastated the Global South and continues to displace the world’s most vulnerable populations.
As our political leaders fail to take the kind of action we know we need, it's time to unite for justice to demand the future that we deserve. This transition to a clean, just future is going to take all of us. Let's make it happen:
Join us in Toronto for the March for Jobs, Justice and the Climate on Sunday, July 5th.
In respect and peace,
Clayton
P.S. Unable to come down to Toronto on July 5th? On July 4th, communities across Canada are taking action for jobs, justice and the climate declaring that 'We > Tar Sands.' Click here to find an action near you or sign up to host one.
