Starbucks Coffee Company: Urge Starbucks Coffee to implement environmental practices

Toronto, Ontario

Starbucks Coffee sells around 4 billion disposable cups a year, which generates a tremendous environmental impact (Minter, 2014). The coffee giant makes little effort to implement environmental practices into its way of doing, whereas it has more than the necessary financial means to do so. Indeed, its stores comprise little or no recycling programs, meaning that most cups, cup sleeves, lids, napkins and straws end up in landfills.
Therefore, let's urge Starbucks Coffee to establish environmental solutions by (1) Enforcing a system that uses and encourages reusable mugs and cups, and (2) Implementing a complete recycling and composting program.
(1) Enforcing a system that uses and encourages reusable mugs: this includes an increase in free reusable mug use when beverage is consumed on site, a system in which employees systematically ask customers if the beverage is to be consumed on site, an increase in dishwasher efficiency and capacity to respond to the higher mug use, and greater information and advertising with respect to Starbucks discount system when personal reusable cup is used.
(2) Implementing a complete recycling and composting program: this includes the development of cups that can be recycled or composted (Starbucks paper cups are lined with a plastic to prevent leaking, which keep them from being recycled, Minter, 2014)), a major increase in recycling and composting bins in store, and greater information and advertising with respect to this recycling and composting program.
In 2015, it is time for multinational enterprises like Starbucks Coffee Company to take the first step to help protect the environment. The suggested changes imply high investments, but many eco-friendly customers will be more likely to shop there and to encourage a socially responsible company. Starbucks Coffee, help save the planet!
