PAOV – There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

HEALTH CANADA, Environment Canada: Reduce The Amount Of Pesticides (PCB) In Canada

Markham, Canada

Toxic pollution occurs when synthetic or natural chemicals are discharged and accumulate to toxic levels in the environment, causing reductions in wildlife numbers, degrading ecosystem functions and threatening human health.
Among the many naturally occurring substances involved, synthetic, or human-made chemicals such as pesticides, PCB’s and dioxins are large groups that remain in the environment for long periods of time destroying animal life and ultimately our ecosystem.
Once in the living food chain, many of these substances are accumulated to even higher concentrations in the tissue of the animals that consume them. Some of the known effects on marine animals include cancer, lesions, genetic and developmental, behavior abnormalities, reproductive failures, sex changes, and death.
Humans may be exposed to toxic pollution from a variety of sources, including contaminated water or food from sea life. The cumulative effects from toxic waste are the most problematic for human health. From recent studies toxic pollution are known to cause reproductive problems, declines in fertility, developmental and learning problems, and suspected links to cancer
Economic Effects
Marine and coastal resources are worth 3 trillion US dollars a year. This is approximately 5% of the world’s GDP. Also 350 million jobs are linked to the Ocean and 97% of fishers live in developing countries. This shows that the Ocean is a major source of income for these employees in developing countries as well.
The Solution – Changing the law
International treaties can initiate stronger efforts to reduce toxic pollution worldwide. A new treaty banning and reducing the production and use of certain pesticides (PCB) and organic pollutants was last negotiated at the Intergovernmental Conference on the Prevention of Marine Pollution Caused by Activities on Land, on November 5, 1995.
The federal government has developed regulations, guidelines, and standards to protect people from the possible health effects of exposure to PCB. However we believe that we need more strict regulations on PCB’s to reduce to the effects on both the environment and human health.
