PAOV – There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

Newmarket Bear Shooting- Review York Regional Police/MNR Response

Milton, Canada

On June 1, 2015 in Newmarket, Ontario, a small black bear was shot and killed by York Regional Police in a residential neighbourhood while waiting for the Ministry of Natural Resources to arrive. The police said they had no other choice, although the bear had not harmed anyone and was hiding in a tree.
Why did it take over an hour for the proper animal control services (Ministry of Natural Resources) to arrive and why were officers not equipped with tranquillizers but instead with a shotgun? This is an inappropriate and unnecessarily violent response to a wild animal in a residential neighbourhood and the responsible parties should answer these questions.
Please support this petition to have a review of Ontario law enforcement agencies and Ministry of Natural Resources wildlife response practices and to make sure animals and wildlife are not killed unnecessarily. Please support this petition to ask the Government of Ontario to have police forces equipped with tranquillizers and to be properly trained for wildlife responses, as well as to ensure Ministry of Natural Resources respond in a timely manner, so this unnecessary animal death does not occur again.
