We have been collaborating with experts at the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) to launch a new open source Internet Performance Test that will help us better understand Canada’s Internet.1
By using the tool, Internet users across the country are already building a wealth of knowledge that groups like OpenMedia can use to ensure key government officials know we need faster, more affordable services.
So today, we’re offering an exciting opportunity to learn more about it, and the future of Canada’s Internet. We’re hosting an all-star Social Media Town Hall Q&A right now on the future of the Internet, and CIRA’s open source tool. And here’s how you can join:
- On Facebook
- Via Twitter here, here, and here, or using the hashtag #CanadasNet ...
- On reddit
- On Google+
- And in the comments section of this blog.
And the best part? We’ll be joined by an all-star cast of Canadian Internet experts who can answer any question you can throw at us! So bring your best! We’ll be joined by...
- Jacques Latour, Chief Technology Officer of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA)
- Catherine Middleton, Canada Research Chair in Communication Technologies in the Information Society at Ryerson University.
- Elliot Noss, online innovator and CEO of Tucows and Ting
- Peter Nowak, prolific technology journalist
- Josh Tabish, from grassroots Internet freedom group OpenMedia
- Tamara Shepherd, London School of Economics (pending)

We really hope you’ll join us any way you can and ask tough questions about how we can make the open web even better than it already is!
For a full listing of all the ways to join, and more info on CIRA’s open source Internet performance test, be sure to check out this blog.
This panel of experts will be on hand to discuss the “so what” of speed tests and delve much deeper into what the information means for access, policy, and the future of the Internet.
Now, Paov, here’s the thing: as you may have heard, the government just launched a crucial hearing to determine whether Canadians get faster, cheaper Internet.2,3
This means our Social Media Town Hall on the future of Canada’s Internet couldn’t have come at a better time. Please join us ASAP and make sure you get your question in!
We’ll be monitoring the questions that come in throughout the day and will make sure that yours get answered between 10am and 6pm PST / 1pm and 9pm EST. And please forgive us if we take a bit of time to get back to you–remember, there are more of you than there are of us :)
On our end, OpenMedia will take note of your questions, concerns, and thoughts, and make sure they inform how we represent you in the historic government hearing shaping whether Canadians get access to the next-generation Internet services they deserve.
Now, this only works if you take part. Please, Paov, put your imagination to work and ask us anything you want about the future of the Internet, CIRA’s new Internet performance tool, or the barriers that face those on the other side of Canada’s digital divide.
We’re counting on you.
–Josh, on behalf of OpenMedia
