GE Crops

Get real about GE

Tell USDA to tighten oversight of GE crops to protect farmer livelihoods and healthy communities.

Take Action

Dear Paov,

We know genetically engineered (GE) crops are allowed on the market with insufficient oversight — and too much emphasis on what works for corporations like Monsanto instead of what works for farmers.

But right now, we have an opportunity to push for better national policies.

Close the loopholes! » The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is starting from scratch when it comes to assessing GE crops — and the agency is asking for input. Before the comment period closes on Monday, join us in telling USDA we need stronger regulations that protect farmers, rural communities and the environment!

USDA is the key agency charged with oversight of genetically engineered crops, along with the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. But the process is uncoordinated and full of loopholes and gaps, putting GE seeds on the market and in fields without independent analysis of impacts on farmer livelihoods or the environment.

The reality is that most GE crops are designed to work in concert with hazardous pesticides, driving up use of chemicals that threaten the health of those working in the fields and living nearby. Farmer livelihoods are on the line as well: pesticide drift can damage non-GE crops in nearby fields, and frequent application of herbicides like RoundUp have created “superweeds” that plague farmlands.

Time to get real about GE » Tell USDA to weigh the full impact of GE crops! For too long, regulators have relied on input from Monsanto and the rest of the “Big 6” corporations, rather than assessing real, on-the-ground impacts. Sign on today, and we’ll deliver your input!

USDA’s inadequate oversight has left the fox guarding the henhouse. Tell USDA we need strong, mandatory regulations that protect farmer livelihoods, healthy communities and the environment.

Thank you for speaking up.
