Paov,

It’s been a notable week for Canadian cell phone users. On Wednesday, the government approved a deal that will see telecom giant Rogers take over the independent provider Mobilicity. Although it’s not all bad news - indie provider Wind will benefit from a substantial amount of new spectrum - this deal will ultimately mean reduced choice for cell phone customers. Check out the links below for more analysis from ourselves and others.

On the privacy front, conservatives and Canadians are speaking out about Bill C-51 on the Conservative Party Facebook page, following an impassioned appeal by grassroots conservative activist Connie Fournier. The Conservative Party even went so far as to block some Canadians from speaking out at all - they seem to be running scared of public opinion given how unpopular Bill C-51 is becoming. Stay tuned for more on this!

Finally, it looks like the battle over the Trans-Pacific Partnership’s Internet censorship plan is about to start in earnest. This week the U.S. Congress passed new rules that will make it easier for President Obama to get approval for the final deal. Here in Canada, we expect this could become a crucial election issue - who wants a TPP that will make our Internet more expensive, censored, and policed?
