There is compelling evidence for phasing out the use of glyphosate-based herbicides. While acute toxicity of glyphosate is officially declared low by government agencies, agricultural workers have reported symptoms including skin irritation, skin lesions, eye irritation, allergies, respiratory problems and vomiting. Studies carried out by the University of Caen show that the inert ingredients used in glyphosate herbicides increase the toxicity of glyphosate and cause human cell damage and death. Epidemiological studies in Argentina have found links between glyphosate use and human birth defects. Genetic malformations in amphibians have also been documented. Swedish scientists have found that exposure to glyphosate is a risk factor for the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Soil biology is strongly disrupted by glyphosate, which is toxic to many beneficial micro- and macro-organisms including earthworms. It harms a wide range of microbes responsible for mineral uptake in soil. Glyphosate is retained and can be transported in soils. In regions with long, biologically inactive winters, this can have cumulative effects on soil ecology. Habitat disruptions are also a result of glyphosate use and contamination of ground water supplies has been documented in Spain and the US.
