SAVE DOOR-TO-DOOR, STOP HARPER!

By Angela Jones, a CUPW activist and Campaign Coordinator for the Toronto CUPW Local

On December 11, 2013 Canada Post, with Harper’s blessing, announced their 5 point plan which included the elimination of door to door, greater privatization of postal outlets, increase in postage, introduction of new work methods and reductions in employee compensation.

The NDP and Green Party have come out for the restoration of home mail delivery to people who have lost it. In addition, most parties have gone on record as being opposed to the rate hikes and other cuts in Canada Post’s five-point plan.

By Robert Devet

KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – Hundreds of members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), in town for a meeting of IATSE’s International General Executive Board, rallied this morning at the offices of Egg Films on Lower Water Street.

Earlier the company fought the Local 849 union certification at the Labour Board, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. Read more!

For Aronowitz, American labor’s decline can be traced all the way back to how industrial relations were designed by the Roosevelt administration’s New Deal and the immediate pressures labour faced after the end of the war. Read more!

HOW A $15 MINIMUM WAGE REDUCES POVERTY AND SAVES US ALL MONEY

By Jesse Bauman

Karen Maleka is a part-time personal support worker. She works in and around Cambridge, taking care of sick people, old people, people who can no longer care for themselves. Each week she works 35 to 40 hours, and yet her employer classifies her as a part time employee.

I met Karen last Thursday morning in a Tim Horton’s parking lot on Hespeler road, where she had just hopped off the bus. As we drove towards Guelph, where Karen would share her experiences at a public consultation organized by the Ministry of Labour, I asked her what she planned to say. Read more!
