Dear friend,
Yesterday was the birthday of the US National Park Service. To coincide with the celebrations of this much-loved institution I had an article published which shines a light into the darkest corners of conservation history.
History has been kind to conservation, and its most shameful origins (in colonialism and eugenics) have been largely written out of the books. My article aims to set the record straight.
Why does it matter? Because conservation crimes are not just historical – the model created in the USA is still informing the way conservation is carried out today.
If conservation is to change for the better, to stop abusing tribal peoples, and to start contributing towards genuine environmental protection, we must push the most powerful conservation organizations to confront their past.
