350s Guide to Voting for Climate in this Election

r1

Friends,

This is the most important election in my lifetime and we’re just three days away from voting day on October 19th. If you haven’t cast your ballot in the advanced polls, make sure you get out and vote. For information about where to go and what to bring, click here.

We’ve been following climate issues closely in this election and here’s our guide to voting for the climate on Monday.

Step One: Vote Out Prime Minister Harper -- If one thing is clear, it’s that our climate just can’t afford another four years of Prime Minister Harper’s relentless support for the oil industry. Under his leadership, Canada has become an international pariah on climate action. Unfortunately, in this current electoral system, the best way of defeating the Conservatives is by voting strategically for the opposition party candidate most... likely to win in our ridings . We recommend taking LeadNow’s pledge to Vote Together in order to determine the best way of doing that -- click here to learn more.

Step Two: Get ready to give the next Prime Minister a proper climate welcome -- The other thing we know for sure is that none of the other parties have a plan that’s in line with the science of climate change. And if we don’t act fast, Canada’s next leader could easily fall into the pockets of Big Oil in no time. That’s why we’re preparing a series of serious but peaceful civil disobedience actions targeting the next Prime Minister and calling upon him to freeze the tar sands and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. We need your help to do this -- sign up to join the Climate Welcome action.

We know that people power moves politicians. President Obama stood firmly in support of the Keystone XL pipeline before hundreds of people risked arrest outside of the White House in 2011 demanding a rejection of the pipeline. Since then, Obama, and many other American politicians, have come out against the pipeline. We’re ready to escalate the calls for climate action here in Canada.

Help us bridge the science and politics of climate change in Canada. We can do that by, first, electing a government that will listen to the people, and then giving the new Prime Minister a welcome they won’t forget.

Onwards,

Cam Fenton
