University of Alberta: Save Andy, the polar bear suffering from abusive science

Andy is a male polar bear who was last seen in October 2015 in the vicinity of Kaktovik, Alaska. The collar was put on Andy when he was a sub-adult through the direction of Andrew Derocher with the University of Alberta. The outgrown collar is no longer broadcasting a signal and the release mechanism has failed, causing Andy life-threatening harm. He was last seen acting lethargic and inactive. Those responsible were alerted immediately but only after recent public pressure, the University of Alberta stated that “options to find the bear are being examined“. There is currently no active search going on at this time.

Complications from collaring occur far too often. Apart from post-collar trauma, the collaring process itself involves stressful chases, harmful sedation, and sometimes causes death. Collaring of polar bears should only be done when it is absolutely necessary as it is invasive, expensive, and ethically questionable. The University of Alberta must be transparent and allow the public to be aware of their projects involving polar bears and provide information on their ethical approval and follow-up procedures. This may help ensure that no bear in the future will have to suffer like Andy has.

The University of Alberta and all parties responsible should use every resource available to locate Andy. The more time that is taken, the less chance he has for survival. Andy needs help now.
