Disabilities

PAOV – There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

Canada's adoption of the UN Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is long overdue.

With great fanfare, the Harper government signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2010, but it never took the crucial step of signing and ratifying its Protocol -- the tool for reporting violations by endorsing nations.

Parents are kept awake at night worrying about the long-term future of their children with disabilities, and struggling to get essential supports for them. Their experience and expertise are often ignored, and they sometimes see their adult children placed in segregated shelters, even in seniors' homes!

In these and other ways Canada might be violating the Convention, but we'll never know because it hasn't adopted the Protocol for measuring our performance by UN standards (as for assessing our carbon emissions by the standards of the Kyoto Protocol that Stephen Harper rejected).

If Canada truly wants to protect its most vulnerable citizens it needs to sign and ratify the Convention's Protocol, something the previous government failed to do. Families across the country are counting on their new government to do the right and conscientious thing.

Join me in urging Prime Minister Trudeau to add this important task to his ambitious agenda.
