STUDY PUTS BC MIGRANT WORKERS UNDER A MICROSCOPE

A new study, released by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), provides an in-depth look into the conditions of exploitation facing BC migrant workers, and makes substantive recommendations for federal and provincial policy change.

The report, “Citizenship and Precarious Labour in Canadian Agriculture.” published by Gerardo Otero and Kerry Preibisch, is based on extensive research taking place between 2007 and 2009, and includes questionnaires with 200 farmworkers, with focus on the experiences of farmworkers in British Columbia. WORKLOAD, SAFETY ON THE TABLE FOR BC'S COAST HOTEL WORKERS

Sometimes seen, rarely heard, hotel housekeepers often toil away in the background with little to no recognition for the backbreaking work they do.

As with most jobs in the service industry, the work is physically demanding: housekeepers are constantly on their feet, vacuuming and scrubbing repetitively, wringing towels and lifting up to 14 mattresses per day – all done quietly within the dust-free confines of each hotel room they service per day. THE RIGHT TO REAL PAY FOR REAL WORK

Workers with disabilities face many challenges in Canada’s labour market, including marginalization and exclusion. Only about 25% of individuals with intellectual disabilities are able to find employment. Even at work this often-overlooked segment of the workforce is forced to confront a number of obstacles. Sheila Anderson, Director of Employment Initiatives with the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living is trying to change this. As Anderson remarked in an interview, “As a society there are still a lot of stereotypes, myths and discrimination around individuals with disabilities.” Read more!
