INTERNET INSIDER
December 11th, 2015
... This week, OpenMedia sent an open letter to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, urging him to listen to Canadians and reject Bell Canada’s recent appeal to Cabinet. Nearly 40,000 Canadians have spoken out through our Internet Emergency campaign, demanding that the government reject Bell’s appeal. You can see all the details here.
In the meantime, join our Internet Emergency Thunderclap, which allows hundreds of people to pledge a Twitter or Facebook message all on the same day and at the exact same time. Join it NOW, and we’ll make sure as many Canadians as possible go on the public record to oppose Bell’s power-grab in time for the December 21 deadline to respond to Bell’s appeal.
In international news, the long-awaited European Commission copyright plan was published this week - and it was even worse than we feared. Under their proposals, simply posting a link with an explanatory snippet or extract could be subject to harsh new copyright rules, something that would drastically undermine people's right to access and share news and information online. And because so many popular websites and services live in the EU, Internet users everywhere will be affected. Speak out now and tell the EU Commission to think twice at SaveTheLink.org/Listen
Tired of paying high Internet bills? Things could be about to get worse: Bell is trying to make your bill even more expensive, by crushing affordable, independent providers. Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains can put a stop to Bell's scheme — but he'll only do so if he hears from you. Join our Thunderclap to send Minister Bains a message loud and clear.
