BREAKING: Tar sands giant TransCanada just announced a NAFTA lawsuit demanding $15 billion as compensation for the rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. It’s shameless.
Will you chip in to help fight back?
Donate nowA,
Last year, the dirty, dangerous Keystone XL pipeline was rejected by the U.S. government.
Now, believe it or not, the tar sands company behind Keystone XL is suing the United States under NAFTA -- the North American Free Trade Agreement -- and demanding $15 billion dollars as compensation.
That’s right. This massively polluting corporation is suing a sovereign government for FIFTEEN BILLION DOLLARS because their pipeline was ruled illegal under that country’s environmental laws.
And if the case goes forward the decision won’t even be made in a public courtroom, but in a private tribunal dominated by corporate lawyers.
This is a new low, even for TransCanada. We have a plan to get TransCanada to drop its suit, and also to massively scale up our work on major trade deals, so future lawsuits of this magnitude can’t happen.
Will you chip in to stop TransCanada and dangerous lawsuits like this?
Yes, I'll chip in to stop TransCanada.
TransCanada’s lawsuit could reverse the US government’s decision. But more to the point, if TransCanada wins, it will prove to other tar sands companies and laws and people power don’t matter when you can merely file lawsuits when you don’t get your way.
We can’t let them win this fight. Not this time, and not ever.
Lawsuits like this prove even further just how dangerous global trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Pact (TTIP) are. A corporation should have no right to file a lawsuit on taxpayers after a government took seven years to make its environmental and economic decision about the Keystone XL pipeline.
That’s why we need your support right now to take on TransCanada -- and get them to drop their suit. We also need to scale up our work opposing dangerous trade deals like the TPP and TTIP.
Will you chip in to help fight back?
Yes, I'll chip in to stop TransCanada.
We’ve been at work for years fighting global trade deals, and working to hold the Canadian tar sands industry and BIg Oil to account. We need your help right now to take on this fight -- and we can win.
Thanks for all you do,
Emma and the team at SumOfUs
