Volunteer Opportunity: Help Organize PowerShift Alberta

The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition

Help us organize PowerShift Alberta

PowerShift Alberta is a youth-led organizing initiative that will bring together 500+ people from diverse backgrounds across Alberta, the Prairies, and beyond, to build a movement for climate and environmental justice. It is scheduled to take place from April 1st - 3rd, 2016 in Edmonton, Alberta and will look at climate issues facing Alberta and prairie communities. PowerShift creates space for engaged youth to network, grow community, and learn from each other as we dig into the intersections between environmental and social justice issues and build skills for collective action. With recent shifts in political outlook, more young people are looking for solutions to the climate crisis. With the growing strength of the climate movement, now is the time to catalyze youth organizing in this province and this region.

We are looking for enthusiastic and skilled individuals with a diverse range of experience to be part of organizing PowerShift Alberta. We are seeking both individuals and organizational representatives who wish to participate in the planning as members of:

  • the Core Organizing Team to ensure that things are moving forward effectively and promptly;

  • or as a member of the Volunteer Team on one of the working groups.

The Core Organizing Team will include a variety of youth-based organisations (or organisations with youth representatives) and individuals who are working towards social and environmental justice in different spaces and regions. The Core Organizing Team will work with the CYCC National Director and the PowerShift Coordinator to plan, execute and debrief PowerShift Alberta. Members of the Core Organizing Team will be expected to join at least one working group and contribute regularly to the planning process.

Members of the Volunteer Team are welcome to join one or more of the working groups to contribute to the ongoing planning and organizing that makes PowerShift a by youth, for youth experience like no other. The working groups are: Outreach and Recruitment, Media and Communications, Logistics, Programming, Fundraising, Action and Advocacy Day, Solidarity and Allyship, and Art.

Preliminary planning is already underway! Due to the short planning timeline for PowerShift Alberta, we are asking that organizational representatives and individuals confirm they are joining the Core Organizing Team or joining the Volunteer Team by Tuesday, January 26th. To confirm, please fill out the form below and submit it no later than Tuesday, January 26th.
