PAOV – There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.
Tim Hortons: Give reusable mug users an equal chance to Roll Up The Rim To Win - without the paper cup!
Beaumont, Alberta
The Task: Join us and ask Tim Hortons to give reusable mug users an equal chance to Roll Up The Rim to Win - without the paper cup!
The Problem: Many of us try to do our part for the environment by bringing a reusable mug or thermos to the coffee shop, as opposed to using a disposal paper cup. Tim Hortons claims on their website: "one of the most important areas of action, particularly for our guests, is tackling the waste generated at our restaurant." However, for their annual Roll Up The Rim promotion, they seem to disregard this concern entirely by forcing hot beverage customers to use (or take) a disposable paper cup for a chance to play. As expected, during Roll Up The Rim, many reusable cup users put aside this green choice for the opportunity to win a prize with a paper cup. This promotion increases disposable cup use by over 30%.
The Numbers: There were over 306 million disposable cups produced for the 2015 Roll Up The Rim to Win contest. Outside of the promotion, approximately 5% of people choose to use a reusable mug when purchasing a cup of coffee. If these people could continue to use their reusable mugs while receiving an alternative option to Roll Up The Rim (like a scratch & win or sticker peel placed on the mug), over 15 million disposable coffee cups could be removed from the promotion. The number of cups saved would:
- Stretch from Vancouver to Toronto, placed end-to-end
- Reduce 957 000 pounds of solid waste
- Save around 6 000 trees
By signing this petition, you will help us show Tim Hortons that their customers should not be forced to choose between an environmentally-conscious option and participating in Roll Up the Rim!
