Margarito López, an undocumented worker from the Hot & Crusty café in Manhattan’s Upper Eastside, opens up an envelope. Inside is $290 in cash. Counting out the bills, he says this is pay for a total 60 hours of work. This is our first glimpse into some of the realities facing undocumented workers in the United States.

On Feb. 11, Vancouver’s Just Film Festival’s opening night featured a screening of the documentary The Hand that Feeds, in collaboration with the BC Federation of Labour’s Fight for 15 campaign. The annual Just Film Festival, which ran this year from Feb. 11-13, seeks to “prompt people to action” through film. Read more!



BOYCOTT! SHARPENING A WORKER'S WEAPON

If you see Covered Bridge potato chips, don’t buy them. Tell the store manager why. And if you’re anywhere near Hartland, New Brunswick, head down to the picket lines and support the workers who have been forced to strike after two years of trying to negotiate a first contract.

The boycott against Covered Bridge is another recent example of a labour boycott in Canada. If we look at the Crown Holdings, IKEA and Caterpillar boycotts that have occurred over the past few years we can examine what works, what doesn’t, and understand how we can build more effective boycotts.. WHAT'S AT STAKE FOR TORONTO MUNICIPAL WORKERS

Contract talks between the City of Toronto and 28,000 of its employees are going down to the wire. As of 12:01 a.m. on February 19, CUPE Local 416 representing outside workers at the City of Toronto will be in a legal strike position. CUPE Local 79 representing inside workers will be in a strike position at 12:01 a.m. on February 20.

While both locals are prepared to keep negotiating beyond the deadlines, negotiations remain deadlocked around several key issues.

“First and foremost, the main issue is stability,” says CUPE Local 79 President Tim Maguire. Read more!


LABOURSTART GLOBAL SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE: MAY 6-8, TORONTO

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hold the date! For 2016 LabourStart will be returning to Canada for our Global Solidarity Conference. The conference will be held in partnership with the Labour Council of Toronto and York Region in the city of Toronto, 6-8 May, at Ryerson University.

Hamilton, Canada was where LabourStart held its first-ever open conference. It was such a success that we went on to organize conferences in Australia, Turkey and Germany, each more successful than the last. We’re looking forward to that trend continuing. Read more!
