Did you see the news this week about the 2015 election?
According to Tuesday’s Globe and Mail it was “the highest
voter turnout in almost a quarter-century. Now, Statistics Canada has
a clearer picture of who was behind that shift: Young
people.”1
The team behind ShitHarperDid.com has been
committed to finding creative ways to engage our generation in
politics since 2011. Of course we can’t take too much credit for this
unprecedented shift, but we do know that with your support we’ve
definitely made a big impact since 2011. That’s why I’m excited to share our first
Trudeau-era project with you!
I took a look back to my facebook profile at the time of the last election in 2011. Back then I was 18, all of my posts were about skateboarding and to be honest I don’t even remember if I voted. Getting involved with SHD changed me and I wasn't alone. After the election we got amazing feedback from people all over the country including this email from a supporter in Alberta :
I want to say thanks for all your amazing work over the past four years - I was two months shy of 18 at the last election and having now cast my first ever federal ballot, I'm proud and appreciative of the way my country came together on the important issues. Your efforts helped motivate me to investigate the issues I care about and of course it was always fun to bring out shd.ca at a party! (Okay, maybe my idea of fun is a little intense.) As you are well aware, the defeat of Harper as PM does not necessarily guarantee the death of Harperism. The Liberals have been rather slow and abstract in their promises to undo the damage and I would love to see you lot help to keep the public conversation focused on addressing the dangerous legacy of our dear ex-leader. -Sarah, Alberta
Sarah’s right. Voting in Trudeau wasn’t a solution in and of itself. After the election we asked you what we should focus on next and 85% of you voted in favour of stopping the TPP trade deal.2
Without getting too far into the details, the TPP deal was secretly negotiated for years by the Harper government. It will create more economic inequality, cost thousands of Canadian jobs, raise the price of medicine and threaten internet freedoms.3
Perhaps most shockingly, the TPP will allow corporations and the super wealthy to sue the Canadian government if our laws put public health, safety and economic interests ahead of corporate profits. Under the TPP these cases would be decided in secret private courts that exist outside our own court systems. Trudeau's Liberals signed the deal earlier this month, but they've promised a “full and open public debate” before putting it into law. The TPP can still be stopped but the problem is almost half of Canadians say they still don’t know enough about the deal.4
That’s why we’ve created one of our signature education campaigns aimed at engaging people who otherwise would never gain awareness about the dry and complicated world of global trade.
If 1,000 people donate $10 we can secure enough airtime to
reach nearly 1 million people with this crucial message about the
TPP.
