They worked 12 hours a day, with no more than an hour break under an unrelenting sun, for six days a week. When one worker left the work site without authorization he was imprisoned for four months. Working for the equivalent of $30 a month, they were rewarded with inadequate food and the housing.
“They had only lentils to eat, no proper clothes, no security equipment,” said a former worker interviewed for the United Nations report, Report of the detailed findings of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea, published in June. Read more!
LIBERALS ANNOUNCE REVIEW OF TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER PROGRAM, MIGRANT COALITION CALLS FOR CONSULTATION

On Feb. 17, the federal government announced in mainstream media that it will conduct a full-scale review of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). The Coalition for Migrant Worker Rights Canada (CMWRC) is calling on the Liberal government to reveal details of the review process, and prioritize the voices of migrant workers.
“At the end of the review there should be an improvement in the living and working conditions of migrant workers in Canada,” says Syed Hussan of the Coalition for Migrant Worker Rights Canada. Read more!
ONTARIO BUDGET 2016: MORE LIBERAL SMOKE AND MIRRORS

The early bird budget released by the Ontario Liberals is a masterful work at political triangulation covering for austerity once you cut through the smoke and mirrors of what they are calling their progressive policies.
The Liberals managed to get a lot of positive media attention with their announcement that university and college would be tuition free for those from families who earn under $50,000 per year. The devil is of course in the details, and given the Liberal’s awful record on post secondary education many aren’t confident that this promise will be delivered. Read more!
THE WORKING-CLASS ORIGINS AND LEGACY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD), an annual tradition that began over a hundred years ago. While celebrations continue worldwide, few people remember that the holiday was first initiated by American Socialists. As legend would have it, they were inspired to hold a demonstration in order to mark the anniversary of an 1857 female garment workers’ strike in New York. However, the more accurate account is that in 1908, the Socialist Party of America established a National Woman’s Committee to aid in the party’s recruitment efforts, and the committee’s first action was to declare the last Sunday in February to be Woman’s Day.
