After winning his campaign to get Whole Foods Market to start selling not quite “perfect” fruits and vegetables at reduced prices, Jordan is calling on the world’s largest retailer, Walmart, to follow them in curbing food waste.

I work as a solid waste specialist, so I see firsthand a lot of usable things thrown away as trash. But nothing upsets me more than seeing mass quantities of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables sent to our landfills by food retailers simply on the basis of looks.

That’s why I reached out to Culinary Nutritionist Stefanie Sacks, MS, CNS, CDN and author of What The Fork Are You Eating? to help push Whole Foods Market to begin a pilot program to sell less-than-perfect produce at a reduced cost. Large retailers often have strict cosmetic standards for produce – if it doesn’t match up to the perfect, unblemished size, shape, and color that shoppers have come to expect, it is thrown away. Because of this, a huge quantity of fruits and vegetables are wasted before they even hit grocery store shelves.

This is absurd, as “ugly” produce is just as nutritious as the rest. And what’s worse, many retailers are holding fast to this irresponsible practice even though many Canadians are currently food insecure, and the majority are deficient in fresh fruits and vegetables. Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children go to bed hungry on a regular basis. As long as this is the reality, throwing perfectly good produce out simply can’t be an option for us.

So please join me and Stefanie Sacks in calling on Walmart, one of the biggest retailers in North America, to fight food waste by agreeing to sell cosmetically “less than perfect” produce.

If Walmart started selling imperfect produce, I’m confident that we would see a positive impact in many areas, including water conservation and climate change. And selling the imperfect produce at reduced prices would mean many of the Canadian households that face hunger each day could finally afford to buy it.

This is common sense, as the retailers stand to benefit as well. Stores in Europe, Australia, and even here in Canada have started selling imperfect produce at an average of 30 percent off, and total sales and store traffic have increased. It’s time for Walmart to follow suit and put an end to their wasteful practices. This is truly “low-hanging fruit” in the interest of environmental and social responsibility.

Please sign our petition asking Walmart to join the “ugly fruit and veg revolution” and add imperfect produce to their store aisles.

Thank you,
