Trudeau and the Liberals promised a break from the Harper era -- but the TPP trade deal is more of the same.
The government promised an extensive consultation on the TPP, so we're going to send a loud and clear message.
Tell the government what you think of the TPP.
Take action nowA,
Earlier this year, Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland signed Canada up to the dangerous Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.
The Liberals promised to break away from Harper's corporate policies -- but by signing the TPP, Trudeau's team is endorsing one of the worst legacies from Harper.
Luckily, there's still time to stop it. Trudeau promised Canadians a full and extensive public consultation on this alarming trade deal. So we plan to use each every channel available to tell the government exactly what we think about the biggest corporate power grab in our generation.
Together with a number of other Canadian organizations, we’ve launched Let’s Talk TPP -- a platform designed to ensure that decision-makers across Canadian politics hear where we stand. Now it’s time to make your voice heard loud and clear.
On February 4th, Canada signed the TPP without so much as a study on the costs and benefits of the deal. But if we can keep Parliament from ratifying the deal, we can keep it from becoming law. We need a massive groundswell of public opposition.
The TPP is a terrible deal for Canada. It could:
- Empower foreign companies to sue Canada for regulations that protect the environment and people.
- Increase the cost of medicine and restrict digital freedoms that allow us to innovate and share culture.
- Give unprecedented power to corporations through copyright laws to censor the free exchange of information on the Internet eroding our civil liberties.
And that’s just the beginning.
It spells bad news for the economy. An independent study shows that Canada would lose at least 58,000 jobs under the TPP, including 20,000 auto-sector jobs, and the livelihoods of our dairy farmers would be put at risk.
Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberals ran on a platform of real change for Canada. Now they need to walk the talk -- it’s time for them to break from the legacy of the Harper era and name the TPP for the bad deal it is.
Now that the government is finally taking the TPP to the court of public opinion, we need to make sure they hear us loud and clear when we say the TPP is a bad deal for Canada. Let’s make this consultation more than just window-dressing, and seize this opportunity to make our voices heard.
Tell your MP and the Trade Minister: Canada says NO to the TPP.
Thanks for all that you do,
Angus, Ledys, Liz and the team at SumOfUs
