"I want to thank the Foundation and the TUC for this award on behalf of the more than 135,000 people who participate regularly in LabourStart campaigns and the dozens of volunteer translators who make sure that those campaigns are accessible to ordinary working people around the world."
I could have added that in addition to the campaigns we host on our website, LabourStart encourages trade unionists to support other online campaigns, including those launched by the various global union federations. This week, I'd like to mention three of these and ask for your support.
Sweden: Fighting for jobs at a food factory
The Swedish Food Workers Union is fighting plans to shut down the Findus frozen food factory in Bjuv, which would throw 450 workers out of a job and devastate the many hundreds of farmers who supply the plant. On March 31, the CEO of Nomad Foods, an investment vehicle registered in the British Virgin Islands, came to the factory, called all staff to a meeting, announced that the factory would close at the end of the year and immediately left the country. Liberia: Rights of health care workers who defeated Ebola under attack
The story of the Ebola epidemic that threatened to cause millions of deaths across west Africa is a story of heroic efforts by health care workers, many of them unpaid volunteers. In the middle of the crisis, in February 2014, a nationwide strike took place in Liberia as workers demanded improved protective equipment and medication. The government reaction was to dismiss 22 of the workers, including union leaders Joseph S. Tamba and George Poe Williams. Twenty of the workers were eventually reinstated -- but not Tamba and Williams. The union they lead has been the target of attacks, acts of interference and discrimination. Public Services International is demanding the reinstatement of Tamba and Williams. You can read more and send off your message of support here.
Global: Health and safety in mines
For Workers Memorial Day (28 April) this year, IndustriALL is ramping up the campaign to get countries to ratify and implement ILO Convention 176 on safety and health in mining. There have been a number of fatal accidents this year, and IndustriALL thinks this is likely to get worse as the commodities crisis hurts mine profitability and owners cut costs. They've launched a Thunderclap which I encourage you to support:
Thanks for taking the time to read this and to support these important campaigns.
