Last week, PM Trudeau signed the Paris climate agreement and announced public consultations with town halls across the country to create a national climate plan that could be strong enough to make a real difference.
We know fossil fuel lobbyists are working behind closed doors to push for new oil pipelines and a weak climate plan. That’s why we need to show up and speak up to make climate action work for people and the planet.
Pledge to attend a town hall near you
Take the PledgeHere’s the good news: On Friday, Prime Minister Trudeau signed the Paris climate agreement, officially committing Canada to do our part to stop catastrophic climate change1.
On the same day, his government announced cross-country consultations that could lead to a strong national climate strategy if enough of us call for bold action.2 Click here to learn more and pledge to join one of the planned town halls near you.
Here’s the problem: Just before signing the agreement, PM Trudeau expressed his commitment to building new tar sands pipelines.3
But the climate science is clear. If we want to do our part to stop catastrophic climate change, then we need to start cutting global warming pollution now. In the end, most fossil fuels need to stay in the ground and there’s no room for new pipelines to expand the tar sands.4
We now need to come together to stop the worst climate damage. We need a bold plan to build 100% renewable energy, create good jobs and ensure a just transition. But with oil lobbyists pushing hard for new pipelines and a weak climate plan, Prime Minister Trudeau needs to hear from you.
That’s why we’ve partnered with dozens of national and grassroots groups across the country to launch a new campaign: The People’s Climate Plan.
Our goal is to bring people together in communities across Canada to fill these climate climate town halls and give the government the mandate it needs to make Canada a climate leader. Click here to learn more and pledge to show up at a town hall in your riding to get climate action that works for people and planet.
Our job as a movement is to mobilize our communities and show that we’re stronger than the oil lobby, and that means we need to show up to be counted and heard.
Your pledge will help us update you when we have more information about the town hall in your riding and will send a strong message to our new government. As more and more of us take this pledge, we’ll help counter the oil lobby’s influence in Ottawa.
From the early forest fires in BC to the bleaching of 93% of the Great Barrier Reef, we’re already experiencing the effects of climate change.5,6 That’s why we are calling for a national climate strategy that:
- Aligns with the science of climate change and ensures Canada meets its commitments to a 1.5°C world by keeping its fossil fuels reserves in the ground.
- Builds a 100% renewable energy economy by 2050
- Ensures a just transition for indigenous peoples, workers and communities hit hardest by climate change.
The Leadnow community was born before the 2011 election, in part to push back against the Harper government’s agenda of making Canada into a 19th century fossil fuel superpower. For years, we supported the community’s fighting Harper’s plan to build new pipelines to our coasts and we pushed for strong climate action - and you were at the center of this fight.
Now that we have a new government that recognizes the reality and urgency of climate change, we have a generational opportunity to make Canada a climate leader. We just need to make sure the government knows we are all more powerful that the oil lobby.
We need you to give our new leaders a mandate for a strong climate plan. Pledge to join a town hall in your riding at http://www.leadnow.ca/peoples-climate
With hope and respect,
