Brussels, 20 April 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has endorsed a statement from its Regional Organisation for the Americas, TUCA, in defence of democracy in Brazil as the campaign by conservative forces against President Dilma intensifies.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said: “President Dilma has been referred for impeachment by a Chamber of Deputies which is rife with corruption, with more than half the members accused of or charged with corrupt activities. The move to depose Brazil’s elected President is a political move intended to back the huge progress made, especially for the poorest, in the years since Dilma’s predecessor Lula was first elected. The plans of those who are seeking to replace her are now emerging – privatisation, sale of national assets, weakening of labour protections, rolling back social programmes and putting corrupt and greedy oligarchs back in charge of the economy. Democracy and the rule of law are now under threat in Brazil.”
