LESSONS FROM THE SEATAC LIVING WAGE VICTORY

On April 23, SeaTac airport worker Socrates Bravo and community organizer Claudia Alexandra Paras spoke to delegates of Organize BC’s Canroots 2016 Conference about the massive referendum victory that forced the small US city of SeaTac into implementing a $15 living wage –adjusted for inflation – for its 6,000 airport and hotel workers.
Known as “Proposition 1,” the ballot initiative passed with a 77 vote margin when residents of SeaTac cast their votes in November, 2013. Read more!
FIGHT FOR FAIRNESS AT NEW BRUNSWICK'S COVERED BRIDGE POTATO CHIPS

Striking Covered Bridge workers in Hartland, New Brunswick, are making little headway with their employer, a staunch union buster. An all-out effort to persuade consumers to boycott the potato chips he makes may bring him to his senses.
Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW) Local 1288P have been out since early January. Some of their co-workers have crossed the picket line, scabs have been hired.

BEWARE OF A FUTURE WITHOUT BASIC INCOME

On April 22, Rankandfile.ca published a piece by Michal Rozworski titled, “Beware of Basic Income.” His principal claim is that we should be cautious around the premise of a guaranteed income for all citizens because of the challenge such a policy might pose to existing social programs in Ontario’s low-tax, austerity driven regime. There are a number of problems with these claims, so let’s take a look at Rozworski’s arguments.
The piece begins by stating, “Wouldn’t it be great to get a cheque every month just for being you? This is the sweet, fuzzy vision the Ontario and federal Liberals are counting on to sell their latest idea, a basic income.” Read more!
SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS HAVE A RIGHT TO BELONG TO THE UNION THEY CHOOSE

Everyone should have the right to belong the union of his or her choosing. But starting last Friday, Saskatchewan employers now have the option of removing workers with supervisory duties from their bargaining unit.
The Saskatchewan Employment Act (SEA), proclaimed on April 29, 2014, includes a new provision that excludes supervisory employees from bargaining units. Read more!
