Friends and Comrades,

Rankandfile.ca needs your help. Since we started in 2012 our little website has grown beyond what we ever thought was possible. We accumulated a big readership and an amazing set of writers, contacts and supporters. We now have three paid writer positions and a wide network of contributors. Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way. Without your encouragement, financial support, stories, and contacts Rankandfile.ca would be dead in the water.

Our monthly readership is now at 20,000 people. To give some perspective we averaged around a thousand in our first year and in year two we averaged roughly 4,000.

This success has come with some obvious growing pains. All of us in this project have given a lot of our time and energy to this project. It has cost us financially and otherwise. We of course do this because we believe in this project and it value in helping to build a stronger working class movement in Canada.

We operate on a budget of roughly $4,000. We would love to double or triple that. On our small budget we employ three very amazing part-time paid writers (Robert Devet Denise Leduc Daniel Tseghay), operate our website, have a modest amount of swag and cover some minor costs associated with equipment and conferences. We would love to have a bigger and more stable budget.

This is where you can help. Please consider being a sustaining member of Rankandfile.ca. For just $5, $10, or $15 a month you can help us grow, hire more writers, launch new projects such as a podcast and expand our coverage. You can donate here: http://rankandfile.ca/donate

We also want more of our amazing readers to feel like Rankandfile.ca is their voice. So we always welcome feedback and stories. If you want to get more involved please do. Only together can we build democracy and power in our movement. Please share this around.

In Solidarity,
Editors of RankandFile.ca

BC'S PIECE RATE FARM WORKERS LEFT OUT OF MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES

By Daniel Tseghay, Rankandfile.ca's BC correspondent

Last week, British Columbia’s Liberal government announced it would raise the minimum wage in two stages. From the current minimum wage of $10.45 – the lowest in Canada – the government will increase it to $10.85 in September of 2016, and then to $11.25 the following September. This increase will benefit around 93,700 people in the province who find themselves working well below the poverty line. Read more!

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BOSSNAPPING

By Evan Johnston

If you’ve never heard of bossnapping, it’s exactly how it sounds: workers kidnapping or detaining their bosses with the aim of pressuring them to concede to their demands. But who, exactly, are the targets of bossnapping, and what does it look like?

It varies depending on the context, but the “bosses” being kidnapped range from managers and human resource directors to executive officers. Read more!

LABOUR STRUGGLES IN PALESTINE AND INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY

The global labour movement has long criticized Israel for human and trade union rights violations and abuse of Palestinian workers, while workers in Palestine are resisting oppression and building a movement we can support. Trade unions and federations of labour in Canada are heeding the call for solidarity made by 170 Palestinian organizations for a Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. Let’s discuss how we can continue to build this solidarity. Read more!
