Last Wednesday, the European Commission published a long-awaited analysis of its online platforms consultation, which many of you took part in. Throughout the process, our Save the Link platform was used to engage with a global community of concerned citizens working to safeguard their right to link with 10,599 respondents included on the public record. The Commission recognized the overwhelming opposition of a ‘Link Tax’ (aka “ancillary copyright”), which could see people losing access to content and businesses forced to obtain a copyright license before posting hyperlinks that include ‘snippets’ of the article being linked to. However, in a communication on online platforms they indicated a continued march towards a European-wide link tax.
Regardless of where you live, if these rules go through your favourite news and media sites could disappear from search engines and aggregators. Help us tell decision-makers we oppose regulations that aim to censor links at SaveTheLink.org.
