That was incredible!
We are truly humbled by the generosity of our community; we reached our initial fundraising goal in just over 6 hours!
We are so grateful to everyone who responded so quickly and so generously to our call for support. This important legal challenge to the government's assisted dying bill is a community effort, and without your help, we would never be able to challenge this restrictive law that violates the rights of suffering Canadians.
Because of the support we've received so far, we have the funds we need to begin work on this case right away. But the total costs of this case are going to be much higher. That’s why we’ve increased our goal to support the next stage of our case.
And we know we’re going to get there, because we have some very exciting news; a long-time supporter of the fight for physician-assisted dying has generously offered us a donation of $25,000 in the hopes of getting our supporters to match it.
That means that every donation you make will go twice as far!
The anonymous donor behind the $25,000 pledge knows that what we've raised so far is an amazing start, but won't get us all the way with this case. We have a chance right now to help make sure that this case is funded through to victory.

What are the hard costs of a case like this?
We can never know in advance exactly what a case will cost, but as we said before, you are making this case happen, so we want to be upfront and transparent with you. Our legal challenge, Carter vs. Canada, which we litigated all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada cost approximately:
• $77,800 for court fees and document production
• $60,300 for expert fees
• $20,850 for witness and expert travel
And these costs represent only a selection of the BCCLA’s actual costs to fight and win the Carter case. Even with the incredible support of our pro bono lawyer team working for free, we believe this case is likely to cost more than $75,000. That’s just for the first round; there will likely be appeals, and it will cost even more.
If you haven't already, share this crowdfunder far and wide! Your support is making this case possible. We can't thank you enough.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson, Executive Director, and the BCCLA team
P.S. Help us to double every dollar we raise this week by donating today.
