Sandra's Drug For Life

Petition by Carman Tugwood edmonton, Canada 621 Supporters Sign Carman's petition

Although this online petition is titled "Sandy's Drug for Life", it is important to know there are hundreds of women who suffer from this horrible death dealing disease of breast cancer and many other forms.

The purpose of this petition is to hopefully accomplish the affordability of a drug that has proven to be effective in putting this disease into remission and extend the life expectancy of those diagnosed with this horrible disease.

There is a drug available at an astronomical cost that has been proven to do the above stated. The drug, IBRANCE, supplied by Pfizer Drug Company, has been approved by Health Canada for usage in Canada, however, it has NOT been funded in Canada at the Provincial level. Meaning that Pharmacare is unable to subsidize the drug until its review and approval by each Province. What we are trying to accomplish is to have the approval at the Provincial level expedited...Fast Tracked....so that Sandy and others who cannot afford this drug treatment can avail themselves of this hope and a prolonged life expectancy. Right now she CAN have it, if she has enough money. The costs ore like this $7500.00 + gst (375.00) = 7875.00 PER MONTH ...LESS 20% that Pfizer Drug company will pay. - $1,575.00, leaving a cost of 6300.00 per month.

These below stated facts from the BC Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Society and Pfizer Drug website, clearly demonstrate not only how many are affected but also are desperately in need of this drug.

Since Sandy's diagnosis in July, 350 women have died. 1700 women have been told they are going to die... In less than a month. 68 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer today. 14 women will die!

How many have died each day, hour and minute will continue to present themselves in ongoing statistics daily.

Action is needed now to make this available. These women and their families need hope and access to what is available. Please sign this petition so that Sandy and others do not live with desperation and fear of the death they face in front of them but rather that the lives of those may be given more time and the others who share this terrible situation with them. Family, friends and others who are also victims of this disease.

This is Sandy's story as told by her sister Cathy;

Nine years ago my baby sister, Sandra Taylor-Pfefferle, at the age of 41, was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer. After two surgeries, a lumpectomy and a partial mastectomy and surgery to remove cancerous tissue and seven lymph nodes, she began and survived six months of chemotherapy and six weeks of daily radiation. She lost her hair, her eyelashes, eyebrows, toenails and fingernails. Not once did she lose her smile, her composure, her sense of humor or her unending zest for life. She was told she was cancer free and had less than a 5% chance of ever contracting this disease again....

Now nine years later, the breast cancer has metastasized to her lungs. After being diagnosed with a routine bladder infection that was problematic, a CT scan of the kidneys revealed nodules in her lungs. A second CT scan showed over 40 cancerous nodules of breast cancer in her lungs. This time the prognosis is not so good. She has been given only months to live.

The cancer is incurable, but treatable with a drug, IBRANCE, www.pfizer.ca/node/7516 currently in trials in Canada, approved by Health Canada for usage in Canada, but not funded in Canada at the Provincial levels, so therefore unable to be subsidized by Pharmacare. Sandy has no extended health coverages, nor life insurance (due to previous cancer diagnosis). The drug is extremely expensive. With the drug, Sandy's life expectancy and quality of life could be greatly improved. Besides an extended life expectancy, the trials have even shown signs of tumor shrinkage with some evidence of prevention of the cancer moving to other areas of the body of patients.

The drug therapy costs $7500.00 + gst per month. Pfizer Drug Company will subsidize 20% of the costs, leaving Sandy and her family to pay $6,300.00 per month. Its seems unbelievable, in our Country that we would put this monetary value on someone's life. We are currently asking the government to expedite the approval, but are drowning in red tape and time.

Sandy has lived in Whistler BC for over 20 years. She has three beautiful children. She battled her first round of cancer while still raising her family. In 2010, she began rescuing dogs and finding loving homes for them. She currently shares her home with seven dogs that need her love and support. She recently started working part-time as a veterinary assistant. A job she loves and is well suited for.

She is an amazing person and acts as a goodwill ambassador in her community. In her past travels she has supported humanitarian projects in other countries. She delivers donated items to schools in Los De Marcos, Mexico and most recently to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas. A school comprised of 85% homeless children. She believes in lending a hand to anyone in need and has always fought the cause of the underdog.

Time is short. I have created this campaign, as humbling and awkward as it is, in the hopes that family, friends and caring individuals that may have never met Sandy, and others whom we do not know will help to alleviate some of the everyday stress of bills and life due to treatment and that she will be able to afford the drug she so needs and deserves. I hope for my sister and her family, as she prepares a journey to extend her life, that all of her energy can be focused on staying well and gaining many months and hopefully years to her life.

It is said that no one could pick the day of their death if asked but yet cancer can pick anybody's if not treated with ALL that is available. Please sign this petition and share it.
