ONTARIO! ALL OUT FOR OCTOBER 1ST!

The Rally for Decent Work on October 1st is an important moment for Ontario’s labour movement. After years of legislative attacks and austerity directed at workers, the rally is a chance to build the movement for $15 and Fairness, push for positive legislative change for workers, and put real pressure on both employers and politicians.
In February of 2015, the Liberal government announced their Changing Workplaces Review, a full-scale review of both the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and the Labour Relations Act (LRA). This review, the first major examination of the ESA and LRA in over a decade, consisted of consultations with labour, community, and business groups from June to September of that year by Special Advisors appointed by the government. PICKING APART THE PRODUCE OF INJUSTICE

Sunday mornings at the Ontario Food Terminal in Toronto usually start off quiet, but transform by mid-morning into a hive of activity, where middlemen, food exporters, and supermarket chains reap huge profits off the under-priced produce handpicked by over forty thousand workers across the province.
This past Sunday, was a little different, as marchers from the Harvesting Freedom caravan picketed outside the terminal at 7am. Read more!
KILLING CANADA POST: TRUDEAU'S TURN

In early September the Canada Post Task Force, promised by Justin Trudeau during the last election to review the postal service’s future, released its discussion paper. The paper was the committee’s preliminary thoughts about the future of Canada Post based on stakeholder meetings, expert opinion and polling. The discussion paper is designed to set the limits of the debate about the future of Canada Post before the public consultations even get underway. Read more!
BOOK REVIEW: UNFREE LABOUR

In 1947, when Jamaican agricultural workers were already making their way to Canada on short-term contracts, Canadian officials resisting the possibility of permanent residency on explicitly racist, and curiously paternalistic, grounds. “The admission to Canada of natives of the West Indies has always been a problem with this Service and we are continually being asked to make provision for the admission of these people,” reads a federal memo. “They are, of course not assimilable and, generally speaking, the climatic conditions of Canada are not favourable to them.” Read more!
