You did it!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Last week I asked you to help us reach our fundraising goal for the launch of our campaign to bring anti-SLAPP legislation back to British Columbia (original message below if you missed it).

I just wanted to circle back to let you know that with your support we hit our $10,000 target to launch our campaign on anti-SLAPP legislation! $10,010 to be exact.

If you donated more than $100 and selected a special print by artist Franke James, it is on its way to you now!

Campaign plans are in the works. In particular, thank you to everyone who responded with their own stories of SLAPP suits. I really need these stories for the public education piece of our campaign, and I will be in touch in a little while to ask if you are comfortable sharing your story.

If you have (or know of) experience of getting SLAPP-ed and haven't already written me, please do send me some information about that experience to This email address is being protected from spambots. Thank you again for being such fierce supporters of human rights and civil liberties in this country.

Talk soon,
Charlotte

P.S. If you haven't had a chance to contribute to this important campaign yet but would like to help bring anti-SLAPP legislation back to BC, you can still contribute here.

Dear friends,

SLAPP suitsthat is, Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation are undermining the health of our democracy.

These lawsuits aim to intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense, and they risk creating a real chill on free expression in this province.

The time is right to fight back against SLAPPs.

The BCCLA is launching a project aimed at bringing anti-SLAPP legislation to British Columbia. The legislation, like the one recently passed in Ontario, would help individuals threatened with legal action to defend themselves from companies or governments with deep pockets.

We aim to raise $10,000 to kick off this project. So far, we've raised $8500. Today, I am asking you to help us reach our $10,000 goal, and launch our law reform work to bring anti-SLAPP legislation to BC.

Can you help us reach our goal by donating $50 or $100 right now?

This issue is fundamental to civil liberties and will have far ranging impacts on the work of environmentalists, First Nations people, critics, and activists alike.

Last week, BCCLA Liberty Award winner Franke James and her husband Billiam James invited us into their home to hold a fundraising reception in support of our anti-SLAPP work. It was a great event, and those in attendance gave generously to help us reach our goal.

We are now just $1500 from our launch goal, and your support could make all the difference.

Please, if you can, donate today to help us reach our goal.

We've got something really special for those who are able to chip in and help us meet our goal right now. See below for more info. If you have any questions, feel free to emailr0
