INTERNET INSIDER
October 28, 2016
Hi I’m Aleks Besan, OpenMedia’s new Volunteer and Community Engagement Specialist! I’ll be handling your Internet Insider from now on, to deliver your weekly update of the latest digital rights news from around the world.
Right now, the OpenMedia office is abuzz as we prepare for what’s set to be a week of major excitement — and not just because it’ll start with Hallowe’en Monday! Many of our top team are off to Ottawa, Canada where they have a whole series of key meetings on privacy and telecom quickly creeping up on them (pun intended). Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter next week for all the latest!
But first, a snapshot of the most recent news. In a major win for privacy advocates, the U.S. FCC voted to place restrictions on the sensitive subscriber information Internet providers will be able to share without their customers’ explicit permission. And worldwide attention is being cast on the proposed $100 billion Time Warner merger with AT&T, as fears mount it could be a zero-rating ploy.
In other news, we’re taking up the privacy torch in a meeting with top advisors to Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale next week, where we’ll be amplifying your calls to repeal the spying Bill C-51, and deliver strong privacy rules to set a positive example for the whole world. We’ll also be testifying at a crucial hearing at Canada’s CRTC on Thursday, where we’ll be defending Net Neutrality and presenting a definitive case against data caps. (you can check out this piece by our very own Katy Anderson for more on the background).
Phewwww… Lots of work ahead, but here’s to a spook-tacular weekend, OpenMedia supporters! Let’s hope all the candy fuels our way to more #DigitalDemocracy victories!
