Friends,
It’s hard to know what to say in a moment like this. Many of us are reeling from the news and shaken to the core about what a Trump Presidency will mean for not just the United States, but the world and the work ahead for our movements.
Trump’s racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and climate denial stand in stark contrast to the world we are fighting for, and they make the ground on which we fight for justice more unstable than we have perhaps ever known. But, amidst this uncertainty, one thing is crystal clear this morning, our work just became more important than ever.
Donald Trump has encouraged violence against migrants, people of colour, women and Muslims. He pledged to tear up the Paris climate agreement, resurrect the... Keystone XL pipeline, and has flat out denied the existence of climate change. That someone like Trump is in the White House is, frankly, terrifying -- particularly for those who will be the target of hate and for those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
If Trump follows through on the pledges he has made, the remaining carbon budget for the world to maintain a safe climate is a lot smaller today than it was yesterday. Make no mistake, the fossil fuel industry has a friend and an ally in Donald Trump.
That means, here in Canada, we cannot afford to let our Prime Minister build a single new fossil fuel project. People around the world, especially those on the frontlines of rising waters, raging fires and so many devastating climate impacts quite simply cannot afford that.
The hardest thing to do right now is to hold on to hope, but it’s what we must do. We should feel our anger, mourn, pray, and then do everything we can to fight.
For us, one of the biggest fights there is right now in Canada is to stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Before today, it was about making sure Canada does what is necessary on climate and that this government lives up to its promises to respect Indigenous rights. Today, it’s for the same reasons, but with more resolve.
During times like these, there is so much power in the simple act of finding light in the darkness. If you’re ready to fight, we could use your help organizing nation-wide vigils to stop this pipeline.
If you’re not ready, know that we’re here, this movement is here, we have your back and we’re going to fight like hell.
With hope and resolve,
Katie, Atiya, Aurore, Cam, Clayton, Amanda, and Steph.
