The technical negotiations of week one have mostly adjourned and the high-level segment begins on Monday. This includes the morning arrival of Canada’s Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna. Stay tuned for updates from week two! In the meantime, here’s what we got up to on the day off:

Climate Justice March

Today, hundreds of people from diverse climate justice projects and campaigns in countries all over the world gathered at at Stade El Hartiand marched to Place Bab Doukkala. CYDelegates joined the march not only with fellow COP delegates, but with Moroccan activists from the Imidar protest camp 300 kilometers south (follow the hashtag #300kmsouth to learn more). They came to the city to be part of a press conference and to stand for climate justice—and against state repression—in Marrakech today.

The showing of support for climate justice was fierce and powerful, with locals and conference delegates of all ages walking the streets together. Of prominence in the march and gathering was the Indigenous caucus, made up of Indigenous peoples from across the globe coming together in solidarity. To close the march the Indigenous caucus gathered together all those around them in non-denominational, multilingual prayer:

“Spirit of the water, spirit of the air, spirit of the earth, spirit of the fire; with your permission we leave this march in your hands so you can give us the strength to continue in our resistance. Together with the spirit of the mountains, the spirit of the space, we are here with their strength for the fight of our lives, and our earth.”

Art!

In the warm rooftop sun of Marrakech, amidst plants and terracotta walls, we took a break from the conference centre and prepared for our upcoming week by creating art together!

At the centre of this creation and connection was a powerful art piece by Isaac Murdoch, an incredible Indigenous artist and activist from Turtle Island. This striking piece of art—Thunderbird Woman—has been shared with people fighting on the front lines of climate change and has been spread to all corners of resistance across this world.

Isaac generously shared his art with us, to infuse COP22 with the spirit of water protectors and directly connect the work back home from this international stage.

Many of our deep connections to climate justice work are intimately linked with water and its importance, its sacredness. As we prepare to fight for the rejection of the Kinder Morgan Pipeline, for the implementation of UNDRIP, and for Canada to be a leader in climate justice, Isaac’s art will be a central point of strength and community for us all. Our message will be loud and clear: Water Is Life. No Pipelines.

Les négociations techniques de la première semaine sont quasiment conclues et le segment de haut niveau commence lundi. En attendant, voici ce que nous avons fait pendant notre jour de congé:

Marche pour la justice climatique

Aujourd'hui, des centaines de personnes venant de diverse campagnes et projets sur la justice climatique d’autour du monde se sont unis au Stade El Harti et ont marché à la Place Bab Doukkala. DéléguéeJC ont joint non seulement des délégués de la COP22 mais aussi des activistes marocains du camp de protestation à Imidar, 300 kilomètres sud et suivez le hashtag # 300kmsouth pour en savoir plus. Ils sont venus en ville pour participer à une conférence de presse et pour défendre la justice climatique et la répression politique à Marrakech aujourd'hui.

La démonstration du soutien pour la justice climatique était passionnée et puissante, avec des habitants et des délégués de conférence de tous âges marchant ensemble dans les rues. Une présence importante durant la marche et le rassemblement était le caucus autochtone, composé de peuples autochtones du monde entier rassemblés en solidarité. Pour conclure la marche, le caucus autochtone rassembla tous autour d’eux pour une prière non-religieuse et multilingue:

"Esprit de l'eau, esprit de l'air, esprit de la terre, esprit du feu; Avec votre permission nous laissons cette marche entre vos mains pour pouvoir nous donner la force de continuer dans notre résistance. Ensemble, avec l'esprit des montagnes, l'esprit de l'espace, nous sommes ici avec leur force pour la lutte de nos vies et de notre terre. "

Art!

Sur un toit ensoleillé de Marrakech, au milieu des plantes et des murs en terre cuite, nous avons pris une pause de la conférence et avons préparé notre prochaine semaine en créant de l'art ensemble!

Au centre de cette création et connexion était une œuvre d'art puissante par Isaac Murdoch, un incroyable artiste autochtone et activiste de « Turtle Island ». Cette pièce d'art marquante, nommée Femme Oiseau-tonnerre (Thunderbird Woman), a été partagée avec ceux en défense de première ligne contre le changement climatique et a été répandu dans tous les coins de résistance à travers le monde.

Isaac a généreusement partagé son art avec nous, pour infuser COP22 avec l'esprit des protecteurs de l’eau et pour directement connecter son travail avec la scène internationale.

Plusieurs liens profonds dans le travail de justice climatique sont intimement reliés à l'eau et à son importance, à son essence sacrée. En préparant pour la lutte pour le rejet du pipeline Kinder Morgan, pour la mise en œuvre de l'UNDRIP et pour que le Canada soit un leader en justice climatique, l'art d'Isaac sera un point de force et de communauté pour nous tous. Notre message sera fort et clair: L'eau est la vie. Pas de pipelines.
