In our first week of the post-Trump era, global digital democracy continues to face monumental shifts.

First, in a remarkable turn of events, we have seen a major victory -- the U.S. Congress has decided not to consider ratifying the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Yes, after months of active campaigning and your support, the TPP is finally dead.

Sadly, threats to our online free expression continue through a proposed new ISP tax in Canada. Writing in Buzzfeed, our external counsel Cynthia Khoo offers a great list of six reasons why this Internet tax is a horrible idea. Canadians can voice their opposition to this ‘digital tax on everything’ too through our online petition.

It’s already clear that over the coming weeks and months we’ll really need to step up to protect the free and open Internet against the huge threat posed by Donald Trump who, to take just one example, will soon assume control over the NSA spy agency.

Luckily, lots of concerned folks are speaking up and offering handy tools like this Trump Privacy Guide. You can also check out this viral twitter chain from a former U.S. congressional staffer who offers insider tips on how best to grab the attention of representatives in Congress.

With stark warnings from privacy experts that Trump would likely seriously abuse the already ridiculously powerful intelligence gathering institutions in the U.S., the team here is gearing up for a long sustained fight ahead. As ever, we welcome your support - and stay tuned as we continue to bring you more breaking news from the Internet frontlines.
