Animal Justice makes history at the Supreme Court of Canada

In a landmark moment for animal law in Canada, Animal Justice intervened on behalf of animals in a Supreme Court appeal on November 9 in Ottawa. Our lawyer Peter Sankoff spoke words never before heard in Canada's top court: "Animal Justice is here to represent the interests of animals." The appeal is... critical to protecting animals from abuse and exploitation, which is why Animal Justice argued that it must remain a crime to sexually abuse animals in any way, shape, or form. We'll let you know as soon as the Court releases its ruling. In the meantime, learn more about this important case.

Speaking up for millions of chickens and turkeys

The agriculture industry just released a draft code of practice for the treatment of chickens and turkeys. Disturbingly, it allows producers to perform painful mutilations on birds, like debeaking. It permits severe overcrowding, and rough handling practices that cause bruises and broken bones. And it fails to stop genetic selection for rapid growth, which leaves birds in chronic, severe pain.

Don't miss the public comment period! Read Animal Justice's submission, tell the industry that you care about chickens and tureys, and sign our petition demanding better standards of care.

Canada Goose: There's nothing humane about coyote fur trim

As the temperature drops, it's heartbreaking to see coyote fur-trimmed Canada Goose jackets popping up on the streets. The jacket company preys on ethically conscious consumers by falsely claiming that its use of fur trim is "humane." But trapping coyotes for their fur is incredibly cruel, which is why Animal Justice filed a legal complaint earlier this year that forced the Competition Bureau to open an investigation into Canada Goose for false advertising. Help keep the pressure on by sharing our petition with your friends and family! And check out Mammoth Outerwear, a new brand of animal-free jackets that's emerging as a real challenger to Canada Goose cruelty.

Woman facing charges for giving water to thirsty pigs gets global support

Last month we told you about Anita Krajnc, a Toronto woman who faces criminal charges for giving water to thirsty pigs awaiting slaughter on a sweltering hot summer day. The global outpouring of support for Anita has been incredible, sparking international headlines and the viral hashtag #CompassionIsNotACrime. People around the world are outraged that Anita is being prosecuted for a final act of kindness toward animals, yet cruelty to animals is often unprosecuted.

Meanwhile, Animal Justice is speaking up on Anita's behalf. Read more in this blog post by our director of farmed animal advocacy, Anna Pippus.
