Leading the legal fight for animal protection
Animal Justice e-Newsletter for February
WATCH: Our billboard video goes viral!
We decided to ask Canadians what they thought of our
69 billboards in Toronto, Vancouver, and Victoria that expose animal
suffering for food, fashion, experiments, and entertainment. "Just
because it's being done doesn't mean it's okay," said one
person.
The video
of these candid street interviews went viral, viewed over 93,000
times on Facebook! WATCH

Going to court to save 21 dogs from execution
Animal Justice was appalled to learn that the Ontario SPCA is seeking a court order to kill 21 dogs rescued from an alleged dog fighting ring last fall. That's why we plan to fight in court to save these dogs from execution! As the innocent victims of a brutal crime, the dogs must not be made to pay the price for the illegal and immoral actions of humans. We plan to intervene in the case and ask the judge to order rehabilitation, not death. Learn more. >>
Demanding action on barn fires
An epidemic of barn fires in Ontario has seen thousands of helpless animals burn alive with no means of escape. Incredibly, industry and the government do almost nothing to prevent or ensure quick responses to barn fires. That's why we're calling for investigations, charges, and reform, making the issue visible with uncompromising headlines. Learn more. >>
Delay in dairy abuse prosecution
Twenty months after Canada's largest dairy operation was exposed for its culture of rampant cruelty and neglect toward gentle cows, animal advocates are again demanding justice. We're in Maclean's and many other publications alongside our colleagues at other organizations, explaining how crimes against farmed animals must be taken seriously. Find out how we're holding law enforcement accountable. >>
Animal Justice debates animal rights on CBC Radio's The Current
Animal Justice got national exposure this month when Executive Director Camille Labchuk joined The Current, CBC's flagship radio news program. We discussed the case of Justice the dog, explained the shortcomings in the way our legal system treats animals, and debated with a cattle rancher on why it's time to give legal rights to animals in Canada. Tune in. >>
Tougher rules for B.C. cat and dog breeders
Two recent puppy mill busts in B.C. revealed animals suffering from filthy conditions, broken limbs, missing eyes, and infections. That's why Animal Justice is welcoming a move by the B.C. government to set higher standards for cat and dog breeding. We're urging B.C. to require licenses for breeders, and most importantly to implement regular, unannounced inspections of breeding facilities. Listen to us promote adoptions instead of pet sales on Victoria's largest radio show, and find out why proactive law enforcement matters. >>
