Leading the legal fight for animal protection
Dear PAOV,
What do you picture when you see a "certified humane" label on chicken meat?
I'm guessing you don't picture birds who grow so unnaturally quickly that their hearts, lungs and bones can't keep up. You probably don't picture vast windowless warehouses crammed with up to 15 birds per square metre, birds who will never see the... light of day, breathe fresh air, or enjoy virtually anything that makes life worth living. And you probably wouldn't imagine handfuls of terrified baby animals being stuffed into transport crates, on a slaughter-bound journey that many will not survive.
Yet, this is exactly what the "certified humane" standards used by Sobeys and Safeway allow.
Our viral new video shows that if this surprises you, you're not alone. We asked Canadians what they think "certified humane" should mean, and their answers paint a very different picture from the reality. Please watch and share this video with anyone you know who buys "certified humane" chicken.

It gets worse. Safeway advertises that chickens it certified as humane enjoyed "ample space" and "were handled gently in low stress environments," depicting rolling pasture that the chickens would never see. We recently filed a false advertising complaint with federal regulators over these deceptive marketing claims. You can learn more here and sign our petition here.
The vast majority of animals under human care in this country are chickens, making their treatment a significant matter of public interest. They desperately need our help. Please join us in being a voice for them and demanding a kinder, more just world for all.
