Ontario wolves and coyotes are safe from increased hunting

Public outrage recently forced the Ontario government to back down from a proposal to weaken wildlife laws and let hunters gun down more wolves and coyotes. Animal Justice fought against increased hunting by filing a formal legal submission, plus the government received a whopping 12,113 comments in only one week - nearly all of them against... the cruel proposal. This stunning victory is proof that when compassionate people join together and demand respect for animals, we can win! Learn more. >>

The truth about "certified humane" chicken

Safeway and Sobeys "certified humane" chicken meat standards still allow birds to grow so quickly their bodies can't keep up, and to be kept in crowded barns where they never see sunlight, breathe fresh air, or touch green grass. If this surprises you, you're not alone. We asked Canadians what they think "certified humane" should mean, and their answers paint a very different picture from the reality. Watch and share this video with anyone you know who buys "certified humane" chicken. >>

Bowmanville Zoo charges don't go far enough

Animal Justice made headlines this month calling for stronger legal action against Bowmanville Zoo and its director Michael Hackenberger. After viciously whipping a tiger last year on undercover video, Hackenberger is finally facing charges. But the Zoo itself hasn't been charged, and Hackenberger only faces minor regulatory charges instead of the serious criminal charges that he deserves for deliberately abusing an animal. Find out why this isn't good enough. >>

Fighting to save 21 dogs from death row

Animal Justice was back in court this month in our legal fight to save 21 innocent dogs from court-ordered execution. The dogs were rescued last fall from an alleged dog fighting ring, but now the Ontario SPCA is asking the court to kill them. We believe the victims of dogfighting deserve our compassion, not death row, so we're fighting to save their lives. We've already received high-profile backing from hockey legend Don Cherry, and we'll be back in court next on May 18 to take the next steps. Help us save these 21 dogs. >>

Ottawa bans cat and dog sales in pet stores

Ottawa's city council took a huge step to protect animals this month by voting to ban the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores! This move will help shut down commercial puppy and kitten mills, which cause animals to suffer horribly. Instead, pet stores will be allowed to help adopt animals from shelters into loving homes, which helps reduce overcrowding at shelters and reduces euthanasia rates. Animal Justice supported the ban by making a legal submission during the comment period, and we couldn't be more thrilled that it passed. Learn more. >>
