This time of year things slow down a bit for many of us and so here's a not-urgent message that’s all news and recommendations. Read to the end though as we’re passing along a rare (for us) financial appeal for some strikers who are coming up on the one-year anniversary of their strike.
First up is a very strong recommendation from LabourStart for some summer reading. We’ve been fans of The Graphic History Collective’s work for a few years now and their new release, Drawn to Change, is a collection graphic history comics about working-class struggle in Canada. It shows that in our efforts to bring about a better world, we can look to the past for hope, inspiration, and guidance.
Drawn to Change includes graphic histories of 9 important struggles, from the oppositional efforts of the Knights of Labour in the 19th century and the struggles of Indigenous longshore workers in the 20th century to the experiences of migrant care workers in the 21st century.
And if Drawn to Change gets you through an afternoon in a hammock, think where else it would be useful and fun. Does your union need fresh and engaging educational materials? This is it.
The Graphic History Collective folks are Unifor members and Drawn to Change is a union-made publication. Order copies (there’s a bulk discount) HERE.
What are you doing in the fall of 2017? Even before our Toronto Global Solidarity conference was over we started work on the 2017 edition. Details to come but November is a great time to be in Hong Kong!
Proof Canadians are a big chunk of LabourStart's readership: we've fixed the problems that BlackBerry users were having with some of the content on the mobile version of the website. And of course if your phone is using the BB10 operating system you can install the Android version of the LabourStart app.
7 women have been on a picket line at Cdn Blood Services in Charlottetown since last September. The issue: predictable scheduling that would provide benefits and a family life that works.
These determined folks need us all to do 2 things. Send a solidarity message (go HERE to do that). A few bucks from you or your union for their hardship fund would be welcome too. For where to send a cheque go HERE.
Thanks and have a great summer.
