Lion selfies at nightclub prompt investigation

Toronto nightclub Lavelle is under investigation after Instagram photos showed a lion club being paraded around the club to pose with partygoers. It's illegal to have exotic animals in Toronto, which is why Animal Justice reported the photos to law enforcement. Baby lions aren't selfie props -- they belong with their mothers!

Animals Are Not Freight

Animal Justice took part in a global day of action condemning farmed animal transport practices. Canada's animal transport laws are severely out-of-date, with animals overcrowded, exposed to extreme weather, denied food and water, and trucked for up to 52 hours without rest. Many animals are injured and even die due to horrific conditions during transport.

The egg industry is proposing updated rules for chickens used for eggs in Canada, yet their draft code of practice still allows for sickening animal cruelty in the name of profit. Animal Justice spoke up against cramming chickens into dirty, dark warehouses in wire cages, preventing them from bathing, stretching their limbs, or roaming freely outside, and many more abusive practices.

Shrine Circus faces false advertising complaint

Animal Justice filed a false advertising complaint over misleading ads for the Shrine Circus that ran on Toronto transit vehicles this month. Authorities refused to let the Shrine Circus bring elephants into Canada this year for their brutal and outdated circus shows, yet the ads are still promoting elephant acts. Elephants don't belong in cruel circus performances!

Lion attack reveals the dark side of zoos

After a zookeeper at Quebec's Granby Zoo suffered serious injuries in a lion attack, the zoo industry tried to downplay the risk to the public. But as we point out, over two dozen people have been killed by big cats since the early 90s, and hundreds more injured. Attacks are inevitable when animals are cruelly confined in cages and denied everything that makes life worth living.
