The cruel animal transport industry is on trial

r1 Help us give hope to farmed animals r33

Dear Supporter,

Here's the bad news: virtually all farmed animals are transported at least once in their lives, and it’s so stressful and dangerous that many animals won’t even survive the journey. Canadian transport standards are outdated, lagging behind other Western countries.

But there's hope.

Anita Krajnc's trial has been shining a spotlight on the suffering animals used for food endure on their way to be slaughtered. (If you haven't been following, Anita was charged with criminal mischief for giving water to heat-stressed pigs without their owner's permission—animals are property, and the farmer called the police.) The public is waking up to the reality that how we treat animals is at odds with our values.

I wrote about the trial, and about how it’s revealing a dark underbelly of our animal agriculture system. I also interviewed law professor and Animal Justice advisor Peter Sankoff. He explains why he thinks Anita will be acquitted, and says that our animal protection laws allow for abusive conduct, which is being put on full display in this trial.

And last week, Animal Justice joined forces with advocates from all over the world to take advantage of the attention surrounding Anita’s trial by joining the Not Freight global day of action to keep the public conversation going. You can see a clip from CTV News, read about it in the Toronto Star, and listen to interviews on Radio-Canada International and Victoria’s news talk station CFAX (the topic was so popular, the discussion was extended to an hour!).

We at Animal Justice are fighting for animals, but we need you, too—social movements rely on all of us on the side of justice and compassion to play a role. Here’s what you can do:

  • If you see farmed animals suffering in transport, report it. We can help.
  • Write to your federal and provincial politicians to say that farmed animals are suffering and you want to see change.
  • Boycott industries that are cruel to animals.

Thank you for being a voice for animals.

Sincerely,

Anna Pippus
