We're calling for animal cruelty charges

r1 Pigs hurt and killed in truck rollover outside slaughterhouse r33

Dear PAOV,

Last week, a horrifying scene unfolded outside the Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario when a truck carrying 180 pigs rolled over as it approached the slaughterhouse. Many of the pigs were trapped inside the wreckage, injured or dying, while horrified bystanders listened to their screams. Other pigs emerged from the crash onto the street, dazed and injured.

Despite... the traumatic crash, the surviving pigs were shown no mercy. Video footage shows them being hit with paddles to force them out of the truck, and then marched across the parking lot to be killed.

We were disturbed to learn the slaughterhouse left traumatized and injured animals to suffer in the sun with no medical attention, shelter, or so much as a kind word of comfort. Slaughterhouse bosses also ignored the desperate pleas of compassionate people on the scene, who offered to bring the animals to a nearby sanctuary for care. Instead, they put up tarps and cardboard to try to stop witnesses from filming and photographing the pigs who lay suffering on the ground.

Animal Justice filed a legal complaint with law enforcement—including witnesses statements, and photo and video evidence—and we will be following up to insist the slaughterhouse be charged with animal cruelty.

We’re grateful our friends at Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay for their generosity following this event. For donations made to Animal Justice, Piebird is offering a retreat at their peaceful sanctuary for animal advocates who are struggling to deal with the his horrifying day. Thank you to those who have the courage to witness and document what animals endure on their way to our dinner tables, and to all of you for your ongoing support in our fight for animals.

Sincerely,
