Important update: Animal Justice in court to save dogs

r1 Update on our court fight to save 21 dogs r33

Dear PAOV,

Animal Justice went to court in Chatham, Ontario yesterday to fight for the lives of 21 dogs who were rescued from the horrors of a dogfighting ring. Even though these dogs are victims themselves, the Ontario SPCA is asking a court to execute them, claiming they are unsafe.

The 21 dogs aren't given names in the court filings—only numbers. I want to share the heartbreaking story of... Dog #3 with you because I haven't been able to stop thinking about her.

When Dog #3 was rescued from the dogfighting ring, she was the mother of young puppies. I can only imagine what a relief it must have been for her to know her babies were safe.

In court documents, Dog #3 is described as "sweet and somewhat social" during her assessment. As a mother, she was also eager to return to her puppies. Perhaps this is why Dog #3 failed the "fake dog test"—she growled at a fake dog introduced into her environment.

Experts have criticized this test as being unscientific, yet Dog #3 may still be condemned to die.

Animal Justice is fighting to intervene in the case to be a voice for Dog #3 and all of the others. We're asking the court to let our dog behaviour expert do new, better assessments. We should know in early December whether the court will let us be there.

We're fortunate to have pro bono legal help with this case, but litigation is still expensive. If we get a favourable ruling, we need to be ready to fund travel, expert fees, and other expenses. Can you make a gift today to help us continue our fight for animals like Dog #3?

Thank you for standing by our side while we fight to save these dogs.

Sincerely,

Camille Labchuk
Executive Director
