Dear PAOV,
Two months ago, veterinarian Dr. Mahavir Rekhi of St. Catharines, Ontario was exposed on secret video for viciously hitting, punching, and choking cats and dogs in his care. Even though Dr. Rekhi was convicted of professional misconduct by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), he got off easy with a short suspension. He could be back to work as soon as next month.
The CVO heard from thousands of compassionate people... like you who were outraged by their weak response to Dr. Rekhi's animal abuse, and they are now considering changes to the CVO discipline process. This is good news—the CVO desperately needs tougher sentences for abusive vets, more transparency, and mandatory animal cruelty reporting to the authorities.
Please join us in demanding that the CVO reform its outdated discipline policies to make protecting vulnerable animals the number one priority.
In the meantime, we're still insisting that Dr. Rekhi be prosecuted for his crimes. Because the CVO refused to revoke his license, criminal charges could be the only way to protect animals from Dr. Rekhi. The Ontario SPCA is still investigating Animal Justice's animal cruelty complaint, and we'll let you know as soon as charges are laid.
In the meantime, please take action today by asking the CVO to crack down on abusive vets.
Thank you for always being a voice for animals.
Sincerely,Camille Labchuk
